Description

Windows 10 ESU Year 1 (2025 – 2026) – Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Windows 10 ESU Year 1?

Windows 10 ESU is a paid subscription program that provides ongoing security updates for Windows 10 devices after the official end of support date (October 14, 2025). It helps organizations extend the safe use of their existing PCs while preparing for an upgrade.

2. What are the requirements to purchase and activate Windows 10 ESU?

To purchase and manage Windows 10 Extended Security Updates, you must have Global Administrator permissions in the Microsoft Admin Center.

There are two activation options available, depending on your device connectivity:

a) Multiple Activation Key (MAK)

  • Available through the Cloud Solution Provider program (CSP)
  • Requires internet access only during activation
  • No minimum license requirement
  • Includes immediate provisioning after purchase

b) Key Management Service (KMS)

  • Available only through a Volume Licensing Agreement (VLA)
  • Requires a minimum purchase of five licenses
  • Does not require internet access during activation
  • Provisioning takes five to seven business days
3. How long will Windows 10 ESU be available?

Windows 10 ESU will be offered for up to three years beyond the end of support. Updates are delivered annually, and subscriptions must be purchased for each year to remain eligible.

4. How much does Windows 10 ESU cost?

The program is billed annually, starting at $61 per device for Year One. The cost doubles each year (Year Two and Year Three). ESU is included at no additional charge for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and certain other Azure services.

5. What updates are included in Windows 10 ESU ?

The program only covers critical and important security updates. It does not include new features, non-security fixes, or design changes. Technical support is not included unless you have a separate Microsoft support plan.

6. Can individuals also purchase Windows 10 ESU Year 1?

Yes. While the program is designed for organizations, Windows 10 Home users may also enroll. Microsoft provides separate guidance for consumer enrollment in the Windows 10 ESU program. However, the 365 Cloud Store only provides this perpetual software to organizations.
